Millions of Americans are ringing out 2025 under harsh winter weather conditions, with strong winds, snow, and rain affecting much of the country. Nearly 67 million people remain under wind alerts across the Northeast and New England, from Washington to Boston, where gusts could reach up to 50 miles per hour.

Lake-effect snow continues across the Great Lakes region, with about 7 million people under winter weather alerts. Areas near Lake Erie, including northwestern Pennsylvania, could see significant snowfall, with up to 15 inches expected north of I-90 and as much as two feet in parts of southern Erie and Crawford counties.

Meanwhile, Southern California is bracing for rare rainfall during the New Year’s celebrations. For the first time in two decades, rain is expected at the Rose Parade in Pasadena, as Los Angeles experiences its fifth-wettest holiday season on record. AccuWeather says the heaviest rain is likely overnight into New Year’s Day, potentially impacting celebrations, the Rose Parade on Thursday morning, and the Rose Bowl football game later in the day.

In New York City, Times Square is set to see its coldest ball drop in 10 years, with flurries, gusty winds, and AccuWeather RealFeel temperatures near 14 degrees, prompting officials to urge revelers to bundle up. At the same time, a powerful winter storm sweeping across the Midwest is expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds, and widespread travel disruptions as the New Year begins.
