Gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in men and boys due to hormone imbalance.

In 2008, it was reported that a Texas man’s gynecomastia was linked to excessive soy intake. In 2020, a similar case involving an eight-year-old boy also made headlines.

How could eating or drinking soy trigger this condition? Do soy products pose a broad threat to men?

Over the years, much research has been done into the link between soy intake and health. Some of the studies span decades and tens of thousands of men and women. What difference do they show in the heart health of those who eat the most soy versus those who eat the least?

There is an increasingly broad spectrum of soy products—from edamame to soy protein milk. How soy is consumed also differs broadly across cultures. What relative health risks and benefits do these differences in consumption bring?
