Michele Tafoya, a four-time Emmy Award winner best known for her work on “Sunday Night Football,” has officially launched her campaign for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, filing paperwork this week to seek the Republican nomination in the 2026 elections.

Tafoya also <a href="https://x.com/Michele_Tafoya/status/2013944707701776592?s=20">announced</a> her bid on social media Wednesday, posting that “For years, I walked the sidelines when the stakes were the highest, and that job taught me how leadership really works” and adding, “I’m running for U.S. Senate to bring that experience to Washington and deliver the real results Minnesota deserves.”

Tafoya, a Minnesota resident for 30 years, retired from NBC Sports in 2022 after more than a decade covering the NFL. Since then, she has become a podcast host and conservative commentator.

In her launch video and statements, Tafoya took aim at Minnesota’s Democratic leaders, vowing to reform government, combat fraud, bolster law enforcement, and defend women’s sports.

Tafoya is running for the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Tina Smith, who is not seeking reelection after serving since 2018. The primary is set for Aug. 11, 2026, and the general election will take place Nov. 3.

Tafoya faces a crowded GOP primary, competing against former NBA player Royce White, ex-Minnesota GOP Chair David Hann, Adam Schwarze, and Tom Weiler. On the Democratic side, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan are among the leading contenders for their party’s nomination.

Minnesota is largely a Democratic state in federal elections, with no Republican winning a statewide office since Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s reelection in 2006. The state’s last Republican U.S. Senator, Norm Coleman, lost his seat in 2008, and both Senate seats have remained Democratic since.

In an <a href="https://x.com/Michele_Tafoya/status/2014008661908087157?s=20">interview</a> with Tomi Lahren on Outkick, Tafoya said there is “a crisis of leadership in Minnesota. Every voter, no matter their political stripes, can feel it. They can see it.”

She said that Gov. Tim Walz “is jumping out of his race for that very reason. He knows he’s in trouble, but just shuffling in more establishment candidates is not going to help us. They are the ones that got us into this place, so we need outsiders with some backbone and some spine to say enough is enough.”

“Minnesota is going in the wrong direction. I’ve lived here for 30 years. I've seen it decline, and I’m throwing my hat in the ring,” said Tafoya.

Top Republicans had long urged Tafoya to run. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, quickly endorsed her, posting on social media: “Change is coming, and Michele Tafoya will lead the way.”
