Families of the victims and first responders gathered in Washington on Jan. 28 to mark the first anniversary of a deadly midair collision that killed all onboard.

Jan. 29 marks the anniversary of the 2025 crash above the Potomac River involving an American Airlines regional jet approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.

All aboard both aircraft were killed. Among them were some of the country's most promising young skaters, as well as parents and coaches who were travelling home after a national development camp held following the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.

“While we were powerless in that moment to help our loved ones, we were not powerless to help each other,” said Doug Lane, husband of the late Christine Conrad Lane, 49, and father of aspiring figure skater Spencer Lane, 16. “So that’s what we did, and that’s what we’ve done ever since.”

Investigators are still working toward a final report on what went wrong in the country’s deadliest aviation disaster in more than two decades.
