Yale University has expanded the pool of students who can attend the school tuition-free.

Yale's undergraduate school, Yale College, increased its income threshold for its "zero parent share" financial aid awards to $100,000, and need-based scholarships to $200,000. The school claims that nearly half of American families with school-age children would meet the income threshold, and 80 percent of families would qualify to get at least free tuition.

“For more than 60 years, Yale has considered applicants without regard to their ability to pay and has provided scholarship support to meet families’ full financial need,” Dean of Yale College Pericles Lewis said in a <a href="https://news.yale.edu/2026/01/27/yale-offer-free-tuition-families-incomes-below-200000">press release</a> on the University website. “This approach has been instrumental in attracting the most talented, ambitious, and dynamic undergraduates to Yale.”

Director of financial aid Kari DiFonzo touted the University's expansive financial aid packages.

“Yale makes a special effort to support students with the greatest financial need,” DiFonzo said in the release. “Beyond generous financial aid offers, Yale provides extra grants for students to purchase winter clothing, to pursue summer experiences abroad, and to respond to unexpected financial hardships.”

Yale College has offered "zero parent share" financial aid awards to low-income families since 2010. These awards are grants that cover a student's full expenses, including tuition, housing, and meals, along with estimated travel costs and a health insurance plan. Initially, families with a combined income of $65,000 qualified for these awards. In 2016, they were expanded to include a $2000 start-up grant for incoming freshmen to help purchase a computer, winter clothes, and other assorted expenses; along with a $600 stipend in the remaining three years. In 2017, the awards were further expanded to include a hospitalization health insurance plan worth $2,332 at the time. In 2019, Yale raised the income threshold for families to qualify for zero parent share to $75,000.

Besides the zero parent share threshold, Yale also instituted a new policy for families with a combined income of $200,000: those families will now be eligible for need-based scholarships that would meet or even exceed the cost of tuition. Between the two policies, more than 80 percent of American households with children ages 6-17 would qualify to have their tuition <a href="https://finaid.yale.edu/typesofaid">covered by the school</a>; and nearly half of American households would qualify to have their entire cost of attendance covered.

The new policies will go into effect for students entering Yale College in the 2026-27 school year.

"“I am thrilled that Yale is making this important investment in affordability,” Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Jeremiah Quinlan said of the expanded grants. “With this announcement, we reiterate and reinforce Yale’s commitment to ensuring that cost will never be a barrier between promising students and a Yale College education.”

According to the press release, more than 1,000 of Yale's 6,740 undergraduate students receive a zero parent share award, while 56 percent qualify for need-based aid. On average, a student at Yale receives a scholarship worth $73,000.

Yale <a href="https://finaid.yale.edu/affordability">states</a> that its "[f]inancial aid policies are built on the principles of vertical and horizontal equity: families with different financial resources should expect to have different costs, and families with similar financial resources should expect to have similar costs."
