The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has severed its partnership with the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization that tracks extremist groups.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the agency's decision in a social media post on Friday.

"The Southern Poverty Law Center long ago abandoned civil rights work and turned into a partisan smear machine," Patel <a href="https://x.com/FBIDirectorKash/status/1974111441671123293">wrote on X</a>. "Their so-called 'hate map' has been used to defame mainstream Americans and even inspired violence. That disgraceful record makes them unfit for any FBI partnership."

Patel noted he made it clear during the FBI's Anti-Christian Bias Panel in April that he would not rely on "politicized or agenda-driven intelligence from outside groups."

The SPLC lists nearly 14,00 groups on its so-called "<a href="https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map/">Hate Map,"</a> including Turning Point USA (TPUSA), the conservative youth organization co-founded by slain activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last month while speaking to a crowd during a TPUSA event at Utah Valley University. According to prosecutors, the suspected gunman targeted Kirk for allegedly spreading hate.

Elon Musk has accused SPLC of inciting Kirk's murder.

"Incitement to violence by evil propaganda organizations like SPLC is unacceptable," Musk wrote in an <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1973860354150277393">Oct. 2 X post</a>. "This is getting innocent people killed."

According to SPLC's official website, the Hate Map has been "tracking hate" across the country since 2000. The Hate Map has logged 1,371 different groups on the map, specifically labeling them as anti-immigration and anti-LGBTQ among many other categories. The SPLC has TPUSA listed as an "anti-government" group.

NTD reached out to SPLC seeking comment but did not receive a response by publication.

A spokesperson for the SPLC said the organization has for decades shared data with the public and remains “committed to exposing hate and extremism as we work to equip communities with knowledge and defend the rights and safety of marginalized people.”

The organization states that its mission is to strengthen democracy and voting rights, dismantle white supremacy, end unjust imprisonment and eliminate poverty and economic inequality.

The SPLC was launched in 1971 as a small office in Montgomery, Alabama. The organization currently works across the Deep South to cause on "a region where victories for social justice can lead to transformational change" throughout the United States, according to its <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/state-support/">website</a>.

The organization earlier this week said that funding for hate crimes has "evaporated" under the Trump administration.

“One of the things that we have to talk about is the work that the administration and the Justice Department have done to restrict violence and extremism prevention programs — and eliminate hate crime prevention programs,” Michael Lieberman, senior policy counsel on hate and extremism for the SPLC, wrote in an Oct. 1 <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/resources/stories/hate-crimes-awareness-month-kicks-off/">statement.</a> “There were 56 hate crime prevention programs around the country, including a number from [the SPLC’s focus states], that were summarily terminated in April because they were perceived to be ‘too woke.’”

Friday's announcement came two days after Patel revealed that the FBI would end its partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish organization that tracks anti-Semitism. The ADL had included TPUSA  in a "Glossary of Extremism and Hate." ADL then deleted the entire list from its website following criticism from high-profile conservative figures.
