The FBI has disrupted a terrorist attack planned for New Year's Eve in North Carolina, according to the agency Friday.

“The @FBI and partners foiled another potential New Year's Eve attack from an individual allegedly inspired by ISIS,” FBI Director Kash Patel <a href="https://x.com/FBIDirectorKash/status/2007122621633335796?s=20">wrote on X</a>. Thanks to our great partners for working with us and undoubtedly saving lives.”

Christian Sturdivant, 18, of Mint Hill was arrested on Dec. 31, according to the agency.

Authorities said during a news conference Friday that Sturdivant was arrested following a two-week undercover investigation.

“Americans deserve to celebrate New Year’s Eve without worrying about their personal safety,” U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina said in a statement.

Sturdivant swore allegiance to ISIS and pledged to kill Americans by targeting a grocery store or fast food restaurant in Mint Hill. Authorities declined to name the specific businesses.

According to a criminal complaint, Sturdivant began communicating online with an undercover federal agent posing as an encouraging confidant around Dec. 12, 2025. In his communications, he wrote: “I will do jihad soon.” At one point, Sturdivant sent an online message to that agent that included an image of two hammers and a knife.

Authorities also pointed out that an article in the 2016 issue of ISIS’s propaganda magazine promoted the use of knives to conduct terror attacks in western countries. That same article inspired actual attacks in other countries, law enforcement said.

Sturdivant also planned on purchasing firearms to use in the attack.

On Dec. 29, 2025, law enforcement conducted a search warrant on his residence and found several handwritten documents, including a manifesto titled “New Years Attack 2026.” It outlined details on the planned attack with the goal of killing as many as 20 to 21 Americans.  As part of the plan, he would attack officers and would then die as a martyr.

Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the work of several agencies to foil the potentially deadly attack.

“This successful collaboration between federal and local law enforcement saved American lives from a horrific terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve,” <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/fbi-disrupts-alleged-new-years-eve-attack-man-charged-attempting-provide-material-support">Bondi said</a>. “The Department of Justice remains vigilant in our pursuit of evil ISIS sympathizers — anyone plotting to commit such depraved attacks will face the full force of the law.”

He has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. More charges are expected.

If convicted, Sturdivant faces a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
