Kamala Harris has declined to run for California governor, the former vice president announced in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

"In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor," Harris wrote in a <a href="https://x.com/KamalaHarris/status/1950633431945379888/photo/1">statement posted on X.</a> "I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I have decided not to run for Governor in this election."

Harris added that her leadership and public service will not be in elected office "for now." Instead, she will focus her time on helping get Democrats elected.

Wednesday's announcement follows months of speculation about whether Harris would run after she lost the November 2024 presidential election. Harris was tapped to run in the election after former President Joe Biden dropped out of the race following a debate against President Donald Trump.

In conceding that race to Trump, Harris stated she would not "concede the fight that fueled this campaign."

Harris served as California’s attorney general from 2011 to 2017. Prior to that, she represented California in the U.S. Senate from 2017 to 2021.

Responding to Harris’s decision not to run, California Gov. Gavin Newsom commended her public service.

“Kamala Harris has courageously served our state and country for her entire career,” Newsom <a href="https://x.com/GavinNewsom/status/1950652395006079374">wrote on X</a>. “Whether it be as a prosecutor, Attorney General, Senator, or Vice President she has always kept a simple pledge at the heart of every decision she’s made: For the People. Grateful for her service and friendship — and looking forward to continuing the fight in whatever the future might hold for her.”

Current Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, and former Rep. Katie Porter are among the Democrats running for California governor in 2026.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, launched his gubernatorial bid in February. Biano responded to Harris’s announcement on social media, calling it the best decision for California.

“Kamala Harris's decision to not run for governor is the first right decision in a career full of wrong ones,” he <a href="https://x.com/ChadBianco/status/1950655797333197004">wrote on X</a>.

“Californians are tired of living in an unsafe state they cannot afford, and Kamala seems to understand that the status quo is impossible to defend. We need real leadership - grounded in public safety, common sense, and accountability - not more empty promises from the political elite. I’m running to fix what they broke.”

Steve Hilton, an author and former government policy adviser, is also running on the Republican side.

Harris said she plans to share more details about her own plans in the coming months.

The 2026 California gubernatorial election will take place on Nov. 3, 2026.
