Eighteen-year-old Carter Camacho of Smyrna, Georgia, was arrested Tuesday after authorities say he ran toward the West Front of the U.S. Capitol with a loaded shotgun, prompting officers to surround and detain him on the Lower West Terrace.

According to a <a href="https://www.uscp.gov/media-center/press-releases/uscp-officers-stop-arrest-man-loaded-shotgun-outside-us-capitol">news release</a> by the U.S. Capitol Police, the arrest occurred shortly after noon on Tuesday. A white Mercedes SUV was parked in the 100 block of Maryland Avenue, SW, near the U.S. Botanic Garden. During a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/rlHfm8Wg4CY?si=ZjZ4iBR7MN8Xmnxz">press briefing, </a>USCP Chief Michael Sullivan said the driver exited the vehicle carrying a shotgun and ran “several hundred yards” toward the Capitol before officers confronted him.

“This individual was challenged by United States Capitol Police officers and ordered to drop the weapon, which he did comply with. He laid down the weapon, and then laid down on the ground and was taken into custody by our United States Capitol Police Officers,” Sullivan said.

Police said the shotgun was loaded and that Camacho had multiple rounds of ammunition on him. He was also wearing a tactical-style vest and gloves. Officers who searched the SUV found a gas mask and a helmet inside the vehicle.

Camacho was charged with unlawful activities, carrying a rifle without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, and possession of unregistered ammunition. He was not previously known to Capitol Police.<span style="color: #ff0000;"> </span>

Members of Congress were not in session at the time of the incident and are scheduled to return next week.

Earlier in the day, USCP alerted the public on the social media platform <a href="https://x.com/CapitolPolice">X</a>, writing at 12:34 p.m. that officers had “just arrested a person with what appears to be a gun near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building.”

The department urged people to avoid the area and temporarily closed Maryland Avenue between First and Third Streets, SW. Within 30 minutes, authorities said there did not appear to be additional suspects or an ongoing threat. An all-clear was later issued, and the Lower West Terrace and surrounding roadways were reopened.

Sullivan noted that the department had recently conducted active shooter training in nearly the same location. “Who knows what could have happened if we wouldn’t have officers here standing guard like they do every single day?” he said.

The arrest comes amid heightened concern over threats directed at lawmakers. A <a href="https://www.uscp.gov/media-center/press-releases/uscp-threat-assessment-cases-2025">Capitol Police report</a> released last month found that the agency’s Threat Assessment Section investigated 14,938 concerning statements, behaviors, and communications in 2025, marking the third consecutive annual increase and the highest level in recent years.

“While security on Capitol Grounds has already improved, we have been strengthening our partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the country to keep the Members of Congress safe when they are away from Capitol Hill,” Sullivan said in a statement.
