Germany and the Czech Republic said no to allowing Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to pass through their airspace, according to Bloomberg.

This comes after three African countries had already denied flight clearance, throwing a wrench into Lai’s planned trip to Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in Africa.

The small country of Eswatini is important for Taiwan.

It is Taiwan’s last diplomatic ally in Africa—the only country on the continent that officially recognizes Taiwan. All other countries recognize Communist China, a position adopted by most nations worldwide, including all Western countries.

President Lai had planned to visit Eswatini last week, but three nearby countries denied airspace clearance for his flight under pressure from Beijing.
