The House of Representatives on Friday voted in favor of a resolution condemning socialism ahead of President Donald Trump’s meeting with New York City mayor-elect and Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani.

The House approved the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/119/bills/hconres58/BILLS-119hconres58ih.pdf">resolution</a> in a 285–98 vote, with all the "no" votes cast by Democrats.

Eighty-six Democrats joined all Republicans in supporting the measure.

The resolution was introduced in the lower chamber by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.), the daughter of Cuban immigrants who fled the communist regime of Fidel Castro.

"America’s greatness lies in our FREEDOM and the values our Founders enshrined, government serves the people, not the other way around," Salazar <a href="https://x.com/RepMariaSalazar/status/1991905314656907736">wrote on X</a> following the vote. "Yet today’s Democrats embrace socialism, an ideology that makes government god and destroys the liberty that built this nation. We must reject it completely!"

The resolution "denounces socialism in all its forms and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States," according to text of the measure.

Meanwhile, two Democrats voted “present.”

Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-Ore.) was one of them.

“This is the furthest thing from what the American people need right now,” she said in a statement. “We’re dealing with skyrocketing healthcare costs, unaffordable grocery bills, and, in Portland, a federal takeover. I’m not entertaining this political theater. Quit wasting my time with nonsense and let’s get to work.”

The debate over socialism emerged during Mamdani’s campaign for mayor in the nation’s most expensive city. He ran his mayoral campaign on far-left policies such as free child care and rent freezes, appealing to a progressive base in New York. He also proposed raising taxes on millionaires by 2 percent and hiking the corporate tax rate to 11.5 percent in order to fund his ambitious social programs.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) endorsed Mamdani in his bid for mayor. Notably, he voted in favor of the measure denouncing socialism.

Trump, who has often referred to Mamdani as a communist, predicted his policies would lead to the city's downfall.

Seattle also just elected a Democratic socialist mayor. Katie Wilson, 43, ran a similar campaign as Mamdani in New York, focusing on universal child care, better mass transit, better public safety, and stable, affordable housing.

But the House’s approval of the measure to condemn socialism shows the pushback on Capitol Hill against such socialist policies.

After the resolution’s overwhelming support in the lower chamber, Salazar <a href="https://x.com/RepMariaSalazar/status/1991913951278362839?s=20">noted on X</a> that “more Democrats in the House of Representatives support socialism than oppose it.”

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) has introduced the resolution in the Senate.
