Federal immigration officers arrested nine illegal immigrants in an enforcement operation on New York City's Canal Street on Tuesday, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a sweep of Chinatown in Manhattan on Tuesday, in a part of the neighborhood known for street vendors selling counterfeit luxury goods. The operation swept up nine illegal immigrants, all sub-Saharan African nationals, several of whom had extensive criminal rap sheets including arrests for assaulting law enforcement, burglary, counterfeiting, domestic violence, and other charges. DHS also confirmed four protesters were arrested.

“ICE conducted a targeted, intelligence-driven enforcement operation on Canal Street in New York City, focused on criminal activity relating to selling counterfeit goods yesterday,” Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/10/22/making-new-yorks-canal-street-safe-again-ice-arrests-9-illegal-aliens-canal-street">statement</a>.

“The majority of those arrested (5) were released into the country by the Biden administration. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.”

Of the nine, four had extensive criminal records. Five came from Senegal, one from Guinea, one from Mali, one from Mauritania, and one did not have a country of origin.

The full list of detainees includes:
<ul>
 	<li>Mamadou Ndoye, a Malian national with a final order of removal issued in 2008. Ndoye has the longest rap sheet of the group with charges including assault, reckless endangerment, 3rd-degree counterfeiting (<a href="https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/PEN/165.71">trademarked goods</a>), unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal sale of narcotics, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, making a false police report, and resisting arrest.</li>
 	<li>Idy Sarr, a Senegalese national with a final order of removal issued in 2010. He has previous arrests for obstruction, <a href="https://www.nycourts.gov/judges/cji/2-PenalLaw/170/170-20.pdf">possession of a forged instrument</a> (a legal document showing value or ownership), counterfeiting, failure to disclose origin of recording, drug possession, and possession with intent to sell.</li>
 	<li>Muhammad Ndiaye, also from Senegal, overstayed a B2 tourist visa that expired in 1995. Ndiaye's previous arrests include domestic violence, robbery, receiving stolen property, burglary, <a href="https://www.nycourts.gov/judges/cji/2-PenalLaw/165/165-30%281%29.pdf">fraudulent accosting</a> (stopping someone on the street to defraud them of money or property through tricks or street gambling), forgery, counterfeiting, sale of a controlled substance, obstruction, and disorderly conduct.</li>
 	<li>Bokar Soko, a Mauritanian national, has three arrests for <a href="https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/PEN/165.72">second-degree counterfeiting</a> (affixing a fraudulent trademark to goods with a value over $1,000). He entered the United States as part of a migrant caravan and was released into the country in 2023.</li>
 	<li>Aboubakar Diakite, from unknown origins, has previous arrests for counterfeiting.</li>
 	<li>Modou Mboup, another Senegalese national, entered the country as part of a 140-person migrant caravan and was released into the United States in 2023. He has a record of assaulting Mexican law enforcement.</li>
 	<li>Sergigne Diop, who entered from Senegal in April 2024, and Amadou Diallo, who entered from Guinea in November 2021.</li>
 	<li>Alioune Sy, another Senegalese nationals who entered on a tourist visa in 2023 and overstayed.</li>
</ul>
DHS also <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1981064007927644526">posted a meme</a> to their X account with the nine individuals' mugshots inside blue crystals. The meme hearkens back to a popular meme circulated among pro-Trump accounts during the 2024 election cycle and following his victory, in which Trump traps his political enemies in <a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/donald-trump-trapping-liberals-in-crystals">crystals</a>.

The operation was not without <a href="https://www.ntd.com/protesters-confront-ice-agents-during-new-york-chinatown-operation_1098117.html">incident</a>. Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, while agents were sweeping the streets in a part of Chinatown noted for imitation luxury goods, immigration law enforcement agents arrested a street vendor. Protesters encircled the officer and tried to stop their vehicles, chanting anti-ICE slogans and honking car horns. Several federal agents retreated on foot before reinforcements arrived. One person was arrested for assaulting an officer.
