Iran fired two ballistic missiles at the U.S.–U.K. military base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Saturday.

Britain's Ministry of Defense confirmed the strike targeting the island of Diego Garcia was unsuccessful, without giving further details.

The Israeli military described the attack as involving a long-range missile aimed at an American target on the island.

Diego Garcia is roughly 2,500 miles from Iran's mainland. This suggests Tehran's missile capabilities may extend farther than previously understood.

The UK condemned Iran's actions as reckless "lashing out across the region."

Britain has not joined U.S. or Israeli attacks on Iran directly, but is allowing American bombers to fly from its facilities, including Diego Garcia.

Britain said the Iranian missile attempt on Diego Garcia happened before it officially approved U.S. use of those bases for this conflict.
