In Japan, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi dissolved the lower house of Parliament on Jan. 23. The move clears the way for a snap election on Feb. 8.

The decision is aimed at using her popularity to help the governing party regain lost ground. Takaichi has been in office for just three months. Her approval rating is around 70 percent. Meanwhile, tensions with Beijing are rising following her public remarks in support of Taiwan.

U.S. President Donald Trump is urging Takaichi to increase defense spending as Washington and Beijing compete for military dominance in the region.
