French President Emmanuel Macron said one of the major outcomes he expects from this G7 summit is an agreement on rare earths, given how important they are for defense and AI technology.

China controls 60 percent of global rare earths production, and after Beijing imposed rare earths restrictions in 2025, Western nations all felt the squeeze. President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen said on June 15 that China's rare earth restrictions are already affecting the EU's economy, making the bloc realize the importance of diversifying.
