A Rhode Island man who authorities say staged his own death to avoid sexual assault charges was convicted Wednesday evening of raping a former girlfriend in 2008, marking the first conviction in a series of criminal cases spanning multiple states.

Nicholas Rossi, 38, whose legal name is Nicholas Alahverdian, was found guilty by an eight-person Salt Lake County jury following three days of testimony. He chose not to take the witness stand during proceedings and will face sentencing Oct. 20.

Utah authorities launched their investigation into Rossi in 2018 after DNA evidence from a decade-old rape kit identified him as a suspect. The breakthrough in the case came as part of Utah's statewide initiative to process thousands of backlogged sexual assault evidence kits, which resulted in charges against numerous previously unidentified suspects.

The victim, whose identity is being protected, testified that she met Rossi through a personal advertisement he placed on Craigslist while she was recovering from a traumatic brain injury and living with her parents. Their relationship quickly took off with an engagement just two weeks after their first meeting.

Prosecutors described a pattern of financial exploitation, with the victim testifying that Rossi pressured her to cover expenses for their dates, vehicle repairs, and even their engagement rings. She also alleged he had asked for $1,000 to prevent an eviction from his home.

The sexual assault occurred in Rossi's bedroom after she drove him to his home, the victim testified. She told jurors that dismissive reactions from her parents discouraged her from reporting the incident to police at the time.

Deputy Salt Lake County District Attorney Brandon Simmons said that the nature of their relationship was definitely non-consensual.

"This is not romantic, this is not her mistaking things," he said during his closing arguments.

Following his indictment in Utah County, an online obituary in February 2020 claimed Rossi had died from advanced non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, Rhode Island law enforcement, along with his former legal counsel and previous foster family, questioned the authenticity of his reported death.

Rossi's deception unraveled when he was arrested in Scotland in 2021 while receiving medical treatment for COVID-19. Hospital personnel identified him through distinctive tattoos that matched an Interpol alert, leading to his arrest.

After extradition to Utah in January 2024, Rossi maintained he was an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight who was being wrongfully accused.

Investigators determined he had used at least 12 different aliases over several years to evade capture.

Defense attorney Samantha Dugan argued that relocating internationally and adopting different identities were legal actions, telling jurors, "You're allowed to move, you're allowed to go somewhere else, you're allowed to have a different name.”

The defense team suggested the victim made up the rape allegation years later out of resentment over financial disputes during their brief relationship.

However, prosecutors successfully portrayed Rossi as a manipulative individual who exploited a vulnerable woman recovering from serious injury.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill praised the victim's decision to come forward.

"We are grateful to the survivor in this case for her willingness to come forward, years after this attack took place," Gill stated. "It took courage and bravery to take the stand and confront her attacker to hold him accountable."

Rossi appeared in court using a wheelchair and oxygen tank while wearing formal clothing. The conviction carries a potential sentence of five years to life imprisonment under Utah's first-degree felony rape statute.

A second rape trial is scheduled for September in Utah County, where Rossi faces charges related to another former girlfriend's allegations from September 2008. That victim, who testified in this week's proceedings, reported the assault to police immediately after it happened. She alleged Rossi attacked her at his Orem apartment when she attempted to recover money she claimed he had stolen to purchase computer equipment.

When initially questioned by police about the Utah County case, Rossi claimed the woman had assaulted him and threatened to attack him.

Rossi's legal troubles extend beyond Utah's borders. He spent his childhood in Rhode Island's foster care system and was previously sought by authorities in that state for failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements.

Federal investigators indicate he faces fraud charges in Ohio, where he received a conviction on sex-related charges in 2008.
