The FBI in Tucson revealed Thursday they have arrested an individual who allegedly attempted to exploit the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, by sending a fraudulent ransom demand.

The FBI simultaneously announced a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pimasheriff/posts/pfbid0CwffLGVBvdS3x27bpSsg5gohxC1FD5HGYyXMbxTLD3wdret6SmkvDSHqZqgRNeAJl">$50,000 reward</a> for information leading to Guthrie's recovery or the arrest of those responsible for her disappearance from her Catalina Foothills home.

"We have made one arrest related to an imposter ransom demand, and a complaint will be presented to a magistrate judge later today," said John Edwards, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Tucson office, during a <a href="https://fb.watch/F4UdYusjPw/">press conference</a> alongside Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

Edwards issued a stern warning to others who might attempt similar schemes.

"My next message is to those imposters who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation. We will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions,” he said.

During the press briefing, investigators detailed a timeline of the night Guthrie vanished. According to Sheriff Nanos, she was dropped off at her home around 9:48 p.m. Saturday after having dinner with family. Her garage door closed two minutes later.

At 1:47 a.m. Sunday, her doorbell camera disconnected. At 2:12 a.m., software detected a person on camera, but no video was available because the system had overwritten the footage. By 2:28 a.m., her pacemaker app showed it had disconnected from her phone.

Family members discovered her missing when she failed to appear for church Sunday morning. They called 911 at 12:03 p.m.

DNA testing confirmed that blood found on the front porch belonged to Nancy Guthrie, Nanos said. The doorbell camera had been removed from the home, though authorities declined to confirm reports that other cameras were destroyed.

Despite the intensive investigation, authorities emphasized they have not yet identified anyone responsible.

"I want to be very clear at this time, we have not identified a suspect or a person of interest in this case," Nanos added. "To be clear, we have nobody of interest or any suspects that you would consider a prime suspect. We're just not there yet."

The FBI has deployed significant resources, including agents from its Phoenix office and members of its Critical Incident Response Group from Quantico, Virginia, Edwards said. Cellular analysis teams continue processing digital information from banks, social media companies, phone providers, and other sources.

Edwards addressed whoever may be holding the elderly grandmother directly.

"This is an 84 year old grandma that needs vital medication for her well being. You still have the time to do the right thing before this becomes a worse, much worse scenario for you. Please return Nancy home," he said.

Savannah Guthrie released an emotional video on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUW3mpqD8qd/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==">Instagram</a> Wednesday asking anyone holding her mother to provide proof she remains alive.

"We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated," Guthrie said. "We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her."

The NBC anchor described her mother as "a kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light," she said. "Our mom is our heart and our home. Her health, her heart is fragile."

President Donald Trump spoke with Savannah Guthrie Wednesday and directed federal law enforcement to assist in the search.

Nanos began Thursday's briefing by offering condolences to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, which lost two members in a helicopter crash in northern Arizona Wednesday night.

The sheriff acknowledged the family's visible pain, referring to Guthrie’s Wednesday evening plea.

"We really just want mom back," Nanos said. "Right now, we believe Nancy is still out there."
