Chinese authorities arrested Xia Fugang on Aug. 8. Xia has been accused of killing a neighbor and injuring four others in Henan Province. He fled into a cornfield after the incident, resulting in a manhunt.

What’s unusual was the Chinese public’s reaction to the case. Some locals left food and water in the cornfield for Xia amid the manhunt. Other internet users vowed not to report him, no matter how much money they were offered, hoping to help him avoid arrest.
