Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk on Monday officially launched Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia designed to rival Wikipedia.

Musk touted the work by his xAI team to roll out its debut version, <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1982983035906842651">announcing on X</a> that “Grokipedia.com version 0.1 is now live” and promised that “Version 1.0 will be 10X better.”

The goal is to create an “open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge,” <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1983125099973882120">according to Musk</a>.

The Tesla and SpaceX founder first announced last month that he was working on Grokipedia, promising it would be a “massive improvement over Wikipedia,” the crowdsourced tool that Musk has often described as left-wing propaganda.

Musk, a conservative and ally of President Donald Trump, <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1980340232194257090">said its original launch date was delayed </a> to give more time to "purge out the propaganda."

The tech billionaire <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1972992095859433671">maintained</a> that Grokipedia’s development was a necessary step towards “xAI’s goal of understanding the universe.”

The idea was <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1972992095859433671">suggested</a> by David Sacks, the Trump administration’s artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency czar, who alleged Wikipedia was “hopelessly biased” and was designed by “an army of left-wing activists.”

Wikipedia was launched in 2001 and is written and edited by volunteers, while the Grokipedia content is driven by Musk’s generative AI assistant Grok.

The Grokipedia site has a black and white, minimalist appearance with a search bar for users to type in their searches. So far, Grokipedia is far smaller in comparison with just over 800,000 articles, while Wikipedia has more than 7 million.

Grokipedia’s entry on Wikipedia accuses the site of having “systemic ideological biases—particularly a left-leaning slant in coverage of political figures and topics.”

Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia's cofounder, has disputed claims that the platform is biased.

“The idea we’ve become some sort of crazy left-wing activists is just incorrect – factually incorrect,” <a href="https://www.sciencefocus.com/news/wikipedia-founder-responds-to-elon-musk-wokepedia">Wales said on the BBD Science Focus podcast</a>. “That doesn’t mean there aren’t areas where we can improve. The right answer is to get more people involved. I’d like more kind and thoughtful people who see a bias in a Wikipedia entry not to assume it’s caused by some crazy woke activists who’ll block you the moment you disagree, but to understand that people are just writing from sources. They may not have seen the other side of the debate.”

Wales has also criticized Musk's social media platform X, claiming that it was being overrun by "trolls and lunatics" in an <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/15/x-being-overrun-by-trolls-and-lunatics-after-musk-takeover-wikipedia-founder.html">interview with CNBC at Web Summit.</a>

As the platform makes its online debut, Musk acknowledged that Grok will never be perfect but will strive to be, adding that the <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1983009037156315440">goal of Grok and Grokpedia</a> is “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”

Grokipedia will <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1983009037156315440">never be perfect</a> but will strive to be, Musk said, adding the platform will be continuously updated.
