A new prosecutor has been assigned to take over the Georgia election interference case against President Donald Trump and his allies.

Pete Skandalakis, the executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia, said on Friday that he will replace Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who was removed from the case.

The council was tasked with finding Willis's replacement, but the opportunity to take over the case was declined by several potential prosecutors.

Skandalakis then announced that he'd lead the case himself.

"The filing of this appointment reflects my inability to secure another conflict prosecutor to assume responsibility for this case," Skandalakis said. "Several prosecutors were contacted and, while all were respectful and professional, each declined the appointment."

Skandalakis's appointment comes after Willis was disqualified over the “appearance of impropriety” created by a romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she’d chosen to lead it.

While it would have been easier to let the deadline lapse to secure a new prosecutor, the public has a "legitimate interest in the outcome of this case," Skandalakis said.

Willis first announced the sprawling indictment against Trump and his allies in August 2023, using the state’s anti-racketeering law to allege they schemed to illegally overturn Trump's loss to former President Joe Biden in the 2020 election in Georgia.
