A partial government shutdown took effect on Saturday after Congress failed to enact funding legislation before the deadline. The Senate had passed a funding package a day earlier, but the House of Representatives failed to pass the bill on time to prevent the shutdown. The funding bill is now pending in the House, which is expected to take it up this week.
