In New York, about a dozen elected officials were arrested on Thursday at a protest against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) detention practices.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), they were arrested for obstructing law enforcement during demonstrations at 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan.

"Local police and federal law enforcement arrested 71 agitators and sanctuary politicians including Brad Lander, two New York State Senators, and nine New York State Assembly Members," the agency wrote in a <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/09/18/dhs-statement-sanctuary-politicians-obstruction-law-enforcement-and-bomb-threat-26">statement</a>.

They were issued summonses and released a short time later.

New York state Sen. Julia Salazar, a Democrat, shared on social media that she was among those arrested.

"Today we were arrested at Federal Plaza after we showed up demanding to see the conditions where ICE has been unlawfully keeping our neighbors in immigration detention," Salazar <a href="https://x.com/JuliaCarmel__/status/1968794231834620170">wrote on X</a>. "We want ICE to get out of New York. We won't tolerate the kidnappings and harassment of our people."

Images <a href="https://x.com/saras76/status/1968790374345748827">circulating</a> on social media show a group of demonstrators sitting inside the building, chanting, "We shall not be moved!" as federal agents took them away and handcuffed them. Demonstrators outside the plaza held up signs that read "ICE out of NY."

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander <a href="https://x.com/bradlander/status/1968764586342908050">shared on X</a> earlier Thursday that he was demanding access to the 10th floor of the plaza to conduct oversight of conditions in ICE’s "de facto" detention center and blocking ICE vans from leaving.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned Lander's actions.

"Another day, another sanctuary politician pulling a stunt in attempt to get their 15 minutes of fame while endangering DHS personnel and detainees," McLaughlin said in a statement. "Here are the facts: Brad Lander showed up to 26 Federal Plaza unannounced with agitators and media and proceeded to obstruct law enforcement and cause a scene. He yelled inside the building that he was ‘not leaving’ until detainees were ‘released.’"

The building was later placed on lockdown due to a bomb threat, she added.

DHS has long maintained that 26 Federal Plaza doesn't contain a detention facility. The agency said in a Sept. 17 <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1968384206431805794">statement on X</a> that it's a processing center where illegal immigrants are briefly held to be processed and then transferred to an ICE detention facility.

DHS further said any claims of overcrowding or subprime conditions at ICE facilities are false.

All detainees are provided with proper meals, medical treatment, and opportunities to communicate with their family members and lawyers, DHS said.

McLaughlin noted the detainees being held at 26 Federal Plaza include a confirmed MS-13 member convicted of criminal possession of a weapon and DUI, and an "illegal alien with a final order of removal" who was arrested for flying drones near the White House multiple times.

New York state Sen. Gustavo Rivera was among those officials calling for the detainee's release. He was also arrested.

"This is the first time I've been arrested, but it's insignificant compared to what thousands of New Yorkers are suffering by being literally kidnapped in the streets or in the courts by ICE," Rivera <a href="https://x.com/NYSenatorRivera/status/1968803196081451405">wrote on X</a>.

New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said in a <a href="https://advocate.nyc.gov/press/nyc-public-advocate-williams-coalition-arrested-following-major-ice-protest-at-26-federal-plaza">statement</a> he was arrested for engaging in "nonviolent civil disobedience" to demand oversight of ICE’s detention practices.

Meanwhile, DHS said in its statement that Thursday's rhetoric is contributing to the 1,000 percent surge in assaults against ICE officers.
