Ozzy Osbourne died at age 76. His passing comes just weeks after a farewell concert with the original lineup of Black Sabbath in the UK.

His family, in a statement, shared: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.”

Osbourne had revealed in 2020 that he was battling Parkinson’s disease, a diagnosis he announced after a serious fall.

Osbourne’s career began with Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album in 1969, which introduced a new, heavier sound to rock audiences.

The band’s 1970 album “Paranoid” included songs such as “War Pigs,” “Iron Man,” and the title track “Paranoid.” Despite reaching only number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Paranoid” became closely associated with the band’s identity.

Throughout his time with Black Sabbath and as a solo artist, Osbourne’s stage behavior frequently generated controversy. He was known for actions such as biting the head off a live bat and other stunts involving the audience, like spitting on crowds.

Parents’ groups and religious leaders criticized his use of dark imagery and his lyrics, alleging negative influence on listeners. In a well-publicized response to Cardinal John J. O’Connor’s allegations of “demonic possession and even suicide,” Osbourne wrote, “You are ignorant about the true meaning of my songs. You have also insulted the intelligence of rock fans all over the world.”

In 1987, Osbourne was sued by the parents of a 19-year-old who died by suicide while listening to his song “Suicide Solution.”

The suit was dismissed, with Osbourne stating that the song addressed the dangers of alcohol consumption.

Osbourne’s substance abuse also led to professional consequences; he was dismissed from Black Sabbath in 1979 for persistent absences and lateness, wrote bassist Terry “Geezer” Butler, in his memoir, Into the Void.”

Osbourne then began a solo career, releasing albums such as “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary of a Madman,” which achieved multi-platinum status. In 1996, he founded Ozzfest after being excluded from other major music festivals, establishing an annual event that featured numerous metal bands.

Osbourne appeared on reality television in “The Osbournes,” which focused on his family life. He was later inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—once with Black Sabbath in 2006 and again as a solo artist in 2024.

Osbourne’s most recent reunion with Black Sabbath was held in July 2025 as his final concert, with an audience of 42,000 and appearances from multiple artists.
