Federal prosecutors say the man accused of sparking the deadly Palisades Fire was fueled by anger, personal turmoil, and what they describe as “resentment” toward the wealthy.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old former Uber driver, has pleaded not guilty to starting the January 2025 wildfire that killed 12 people and tore through Pacific Palisades and Malibu.

Investigators said he first ignited a smaller fire on New Year’s Day. The small fire was known as the Lochman Fire, one that burned underground before flaring back up days later into a massive blaze.

In new court filings, prosecutors say Rinderknecht showed signs of growing frustration in the days leading up to the fire. Passengers who rode with Rinderknecht on New Year’s Eve described him as “angry,” “intense,” and “pissed off at the world,” allegedly ranting about capitalism, wealth, and violence.
