The Small Business Administration (SBA) is launching a full audit of federal contracting officers after a major alleged bribery scandal was uncovered at USAID. SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said the alleged fraud revealed deep oversight failures and that it was a sign of broader problems.

Loeffler says the alleged $550 million fraud scheme involved contracts to help the government identify "root causes of irregular migration from Central America." The audit will cover all SBA contracting activity under its small business development program dating back to 2010.

The move follows the guilty plea of former USAID official Roderick Watson, who admitted to accepting more than a million dollars in bribes from contractors over a decade.
