The FBI arrested a Virginia man suspected of placing two pipe bombs around the United States Capitol, marking a breakthrough in the case after nearly five years.

Brian Cole, Jr. has been charged with use of an explosive device, FBI and DOJ officials announced during a <a href="https://x.com/TheJusticeDept/status/1996657530639208938?s=20">press conference</a> Thursday.

“We solved it,” FBI Director Kash Patel said. “He will have his day in court.”

Cole allegedly planted the pipe bombs near the offices of the Democratic and Republican national committees in Washington, D.C., on the evening of Jan. 5, 2021.

Officials declined to disclose specific details of the ongoing investigation, only saying that forensic evidence led to Cole’s arrest.

The high-profile case went unsolved and terrorized the community for years.

But it was solved despite no new information, new tips, or new evidence, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

She added that the “cold case languished for four years” under the Biden administration, but was solved under a fresh set of eyes with the Trump administration.

“That evidence was sitting there collecting dust,” Bondi said.

Jeannine Pirro, United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, said solving the case was like finding a needle in a haystack, but great law enforcement led to a breakthrough.

“Today begins the formal process of accountability,” Pirro said during the press conference, pledging that the United States attorney’s office will “take the case across the finish line.”

Throughout the yearslong investigation, the FBI had released footage of the suspect planting the devices, showing a figure dressed in a hooded sweatshirt, gloves, and a mask. Authorities had urged the public to come forward with tips on the case and offered a $500,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Nobody was hurt before the bombs were deemed safe, but authorities said both devices could have been lethal.

Fortunately, these bombs did not explode, but the pipe bomber “terrorized the community for years, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said.

AG Bondi confirmed that multiple search warrants are now being executed and warned that “there could be more charges to come” as investigators review additional evidence linked to the case.
