Jimmy Swaggart, the globally recognized televangelist whose impassioned preaching and gospel music ministry spanned more than seven decades, died Tuesday at age 90, his family announced.

Swaggart’s death was confirmed in a statement posted to his official Facebook page, quoting the Apostle Paul: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

The family added: “Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ. Today was the day he has sung about for decades. He met his beloved Savior and entered the portals of glory. At the same time, we rejoice knowing that we will see him again one day.”

Swaggart’s passing comes after a recent hospitalization following cardiac arrest at his Baton Rouge home on June 16. His son, Pastor Donnie Swaggart, told the congregation and viewers of the SonLife Broadcasting Network that both he and his own son, Gabe, rushed to Jimmy Swaggart’s home that morning.

“He never regained consciousness. We both took turns giving him chest compressions until EMT could get there … they were able to get a heartbeat back. Right now he is in ICU, and without a miracle, without a miracle, his time will be short,” Donnie Swaggart said.

The Swaggart family, typically private, chose to share openly with their global audience during this difficult period. Donnie Swaggart stated, “We’ve always been very private. We keep our troubles to ourselves. We don’t bring other people into it. We’ve always braved the storms as a family internally, but this is beyond that, and I will be very open and transparent in the days to come, so that everybody will know exactly what is going on.”

Donnie also called for prayers from supporters worldwide, saying, “As he has prayed for you, pray for him.”

He assured viewers that the ministry’s work would continue: “This network was birthed by God, and it’s my dad’s vision, and we will carry that vision forward. We will not retreat, we will not quit, we will not give up. And whether he’s healed here or there, God is still God. He is still the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

Born March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana, Jimmy Swaggart began his ministry in 1955. He rose from humble beginnings, working in oil fields and preaching at Assemblies of God revivals, to become a towering figure in American evangelical broadcasting.

Jimmy Swaggart’s ministry reached millions through radio, print, and television, and he sold more than 17 million gospel recordings.

His musical talent was nurtured in a family that also produced rock ‘n’ roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis and country singer Mickey Gilley. Jimmy Swaggart recalled hearing the call of God at age 8, an experience he described as transformative.

By the late 1980s, his ministry had grown into a multimillion-dollar enterprise, with the SonLife Broadcasting Network and the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge serving as its global hub. In 1986, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries took in an estimated $142 million.

However, Swaggart’s career was marred by scandal. In 1988, he was photographed with a prostitute in New Orleans, leading to a tearful televised confession: “I have sinned against you. I beg you to forgive me,” Swaggart told his parishioners.

He resigned from the Assemblies of God after the church moved to defrock him for “moral failure,” following his refusal to undergo a two-year rehabilitation program.

Despite subsequent controversies, including a second incident involving a prostitute in 1991, Swaggart remained in the pulpit. His audience diminished over the years, but those who remained were loyal. He continued to broadcast church services and gospel music, and his ministry maintained a worldwide presence online.

“My dad was a warrior. My dad was preacher. He didn't want to be anything else except a preacher of the gospel,” Donnie Swaggart said in a video message after his father’s death. “That's what he was put on this earth to do”.

Jimmy Swaggart is survived by his wife Frances, son Donnie, daughter-in-law Debbie, grandson Gabriel, daughter Jill, granddaughter Jennifer, son-in-law Clif, son Matt, daughter-in-law Joanna, and nine great-grandchildren. The family expressed gratitude to the staff at Baton Rouge General Medical Center and requested continued prayers for Frances Swaggart and the extended family.
