Customers outside a German bank chanted “Let us in!” after thieves robbed the branch and made off with more than $10 million worth of cash and valuables, police said on Tuesday.

The perpetrators used the quiet Christmas period to drill their way into the vault of a Sparkasse bank in the city of Gelsenkirchen and then broke into several thousand safe deposit boxes, police said.

Most shops and banks in Germany close on Dec. 24 for the Christmas holiday period. Police only discovered the hole after a fire alarm went off on Monday.

Outside the branch, angry customers said they weren't being given any information, and that they wanted to know which safe deposit boxes were affected.

Police said witnesses reported that they saw several men on Saturday night carrying large bags in the stairwell of an adjacent parking garage.
