President Donald Trump on Monday announced his intent to award former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our Country’s highest civilian honor,” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115130857021044948">wrote</a> on Truth Social. “Details as to time and place to follow."

The honor recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, world peace, or "cultural or other significant public or private endeavors," according to an official government <a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R47639">description</a>.

Giuliani, 81, served as mayor from 1994 to 2001. During that time, he was credited for the city’s thriving economy and declining crime. The nationally-recognized politician became fondly known as “America’s mayor” in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Trump's longtime friend and ally has also been at the center of several legal battles. He has been <a href="https://www.ntd.com/rudy-giuliani-disbarred-for-contesting-the-2020-election_1002648.html">disbarred</a> in Washington and New York for pursuing claims that Trump previously made about his 2020 election loss. Two former Georgia election workers also successfully <a href="https://www.ntd.com/giuliani-ordered-to-turn-assets-over-to-former-georgia-election-workers_1024490.html">sued</a> Giuliani for defamation.

The president's announcement comes just two days after Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident.

He suffered serious injuries, including a spinal fracture, in the Aug. 30 car accident when he was "struck from behind at high speed," according to a <a href="https://x.com/themikeragu/status/1962211227372863536">statement</a> by Michael Ragusa, the head of Giuliani’s security.

New Hampshire State Police on Sunday released new details about the events that led up to the crash.

Giuliani and his driver, Theodore Goodman, were trying to help a woman on the highway, police said. They were traveling southbound on I-93 when they were “flagged down by a woman on the side of the road” south of Exit 9N. The woman claimed she was involved in a domestic violence incident.

Goodman reported the incident to law enforcement, and both men stayed at the scene until state troopers arrived. They reported to responding troopers what they witnessed and then left the scene.

A few minutes later, the pair headed northbound in their vehicle on I-93 when they were suddenly struck by another vehicle directly across from the scene of the reported domestic violence incident on the southbound side.

“Investigators believe the driver who struck Goodman and Giuliani had no connection to the initial domestic violence incident,” police said in a <a href="https://www.nhsp.dos.nh.gov/news-and-media/update-nh-state-police-releases-additional-information-regarding-incident-involving">press release</a>.  “At this time, all aspects of the crash remain under investigation, including whether distraction or curiosity of the initial scene was a factor.”

As of Monday evening, no charges have been filed.

Trump has <a href="https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/medaloffreedom/">honored</a> a range of recipients with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, including athletes, conservative figures, and military leaders. Professional golfer Tiger Woods, former Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia, and four-star General Jack Keane are among the recipients chosen by Trump to receive the country's highest civilian award during his first term.

The national honor was initially created by President Harry S. Truman in 1945 as the Medal of Freedom. In 1963, it was renamed by President John F. Kennedy as the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
