Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned on Tuesday over the U.S.-Israel war against Iran.

“Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” Kent wrote in his <a href="https://x.com/joekent16jan19/status/2033897242986209689?s=46">March 17 resignation letter</a> shared to social media.

Kent, in his role, served as the <a href="https://www.dni.gov/index.php/nctc-who-we-are/director-nctc">“principal counterterrorism advisor”</a> to President Donald Trump. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, where he completed 11 combat deployments to the Middle East, <a href="https://www.dni.gov/index.php/nctc-who-we-are/director-nctc">according to his biography.</a> The combat veteran received various military commendations, including six bronze stars. He's also a Gold Star husband who lost his wife Shannon in a war that he says was "manufactured" by Israel.

Kent, in his resignation letter, blamed the administration's actions against Iran on "high-ranking Israeli officials" and "influential leaders of the American media" who launched a misinformation campaign to encourage pro-war sentiment and undermine the America First agenda.

"This echo chamber was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States, and that you should strike now, there was clear path to swift victory," Kent wrote.

Trump <a href="https://x.com/corefrontline/status/2033945586135663077">told reporters</a> in the Oval Office on Tuesday that he always thought Kent was a "nice guy" but that he was "weak on security," adding that "it's good he's out."

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also issued a response to Kent’s decision, saying in a <a href="https://x.com/PressSec/status/2033932810709315865?s=20">lengthy response shared to X</a> that there were “many false claims” in his resignation letter, particularly that there was “no imminent threat” posed by Iran. Leavitt said Trump received “strong and compelling evidence” that Iran was going to attack the United States first.

“Iran was aggressively expanding their short-range ballistic missiles to combine with their naval assets to give themselves immunity – meaning they would have a degree of a capabilities that would give them immunity to hold us and the rest of the world hostage,” Leavitt <a href="https://x.com/PressSec/status/2033932810709315865?s=20">wrote on X</a>. “ The regime aimed to use those ballistic missiles as a shield to continue achieving their ultimate goal – nuclear weapons.”

Leavitt said Trump gave the Iranian regime every possible opportunity to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

She also described the allegation  that Trump was influenced by Israeli officials and the media, calling the claim “both insulting and laughable." Leavitt stressed that Trump, for decades, has been consistent in his stance that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) responded to Kent’s decision to step down from his post during the weekly GOP press conference and also defended Trump’s decision to take military action against Iran. Johnson, as a member of the Gang of Eight, said he received all the briefings on Iran and understood that there was an imminent threat. He also pointed out that Kent did not attend those briefings.

"I don't know where Joe Kent is getting his information, but he wasn't in those briefings, clearly, because the Secretary of State, the Secretary of War and everyone the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Kane, they had exquisite intelligence, and we understood that this was a serious moment for us,” Johnson <a href="https://x.com/cspan/status/2033921004716626391?s=20">told reporters on Tuesday.</a> “Had the president waited, I am personally convinced that we would have mass casualties of Americans, service members and others, and our installations would have been dramatically damaged.”

Kent wrote in his letter that it was an honor to serve under the president and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. His resignation was effective immediately.
