A rare alert from U.S. authorities to Americans in China.

The U.S. Embassy posted a message on Monday, urging all U.S. citizens in China to enroll in a program called STEP, or the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

It makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to send safety alerts or contact U.S. citizens in China during a natural disaster or civil unrest.

In an advisory, the U.S. State Department listed several risks that U.S. citizens, as well as citizens of other countries, could face in China.

They include exit bans without a fair legal process; being interrogated and detained for alleged violations of Chinese national security laws; being detained without access to U.S. consular services or without being told which law they allegedly broke; and being expelled from China—perhaps the best outcome of all these troubles.
