Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and White House advisor Stephen Miller paid members of the National Guard stationed at Union Station in Washington a visit on Wednesday.

This comes as Guard members were called up to assist law enforcement operations in the city after President Donald Trump issued a federal takeover of Washington, to address the high rate of crime.

Vance, Hegseth, and Miller <a href="https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1mrGmBqRojDJy">appeared</a> at the Shake Shack to greet some of the National Guard members and distribute lunches.

"We wanted to come and say thank you to the National Guard folks, to the cops, for actually keeping this place safe," Vance said.

"We don't have to live like this. We do not have to allow our cities to be taken over by violence and by disorder and by chaos. You can actually do stuff. You can actually bring law and order to communities, you've just got to have the political willpower to do it."

Vance shared an anecdote from one of the first times he brought his family to the nation's capital. He recounted how he was "screamed at by violent vagrants," which terrified his children.

"We've traded some violent crazy people who are screaming at kids for the few crazy liberals who are screaming at the vice president," he said, referring to protesters who could be heard shouting loudly in the background of the live stream. "But I think that's a very worthwhile trade to make because we want people to be able to enjoy our beautiful city."

Protesters showed up outside the restaurant as Vance met with the National Guard members, chanting lines such as "<a href="https://x.com/TheElizMitchell/status/1958210124230578595">fascist scum not welcome here</a>" and "<a href="https://x.com/igorbobic/status/1958206561651978643">free DC</a>." One of them was seen wearing a shirt that said "feed the people, not the war machine"; another carried a sign that said "no troops in DC."

Hegseth said that providing a safe capital was the mission of the National Guard members standing around them, and that he could tell from speaking with them that the members took their mission seriously.

"They're proud of this mission," he said. "They're proud to be a part of making sure law and order is established here in the capital. We're resourcing whatever they need, working with our law enforcement partners."

He added that the Guard was "committed to this mission just like the one at the Southern Border and in Los Angeles."

Miller, who has lived in Washington since 2007, said that crime has been persistent since then, affecting the quality of life for the city's residents—a plurality of whom are black, according to the <a href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/state-by-state/district-of-columbia.html">2020 Census</a>.

"I have seen graffiti that has been untouched for two decades," Miller said. "There are homeless encampments that have made it impossible for families to use public parks and public recreation for as long as I've lived here ... For too long, 99 percent of this city has been terrorized by 1 percent of this city."

Miller said the protesters had no roots in Washington, defending the criminals over the victimized residents. Miller said their efforts would inspire the administration to devote even more resources to getting criminals and gangs off the streets.

"We're gonna ignore these [protesters], and we're gonna get back to the business of protecting the American people and the citizens of Washington, D.C."

Trump's federal takeover has already borne fruit. According to statistics posted by the <a href="https://x.com/DCPoliceUnion/status/1957435067258577173">D.C. Police Union</a> on X, crime has fallen by 8 percent since Aug. 11, including: a 22 percent decrease in violent crime; a 46 percent decrease in robbery; and an 83 percent decrease in carjacking.
