Danish officials said on Wednesday that it fundamentally disagrees with President Donald Trump’s wish of "conquering over Greenland.”

The comments come after the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland participated in closed-door talks in Washington with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump has ramped up calls for the United States to take over the vast territory for the sake of national security. But Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland is not in Denmark's interest, and the government in Greenland supports this position, according to officials.

“We have made it very, very clear that this is not in the interest of the kingdom,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told the media after joining Greenland’s foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, for the closed-door talks.

For now, both sides have agreed to form a high-level working group to further discuss the matter.

“The group, in our view, should focus on how to address the American security concerns, while at the same time respecting the red lines of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen said.

Motzfeldt hopes for constructive dialogue and respect from the U.S. on Greenland’s sovereignty.

Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, is vital to the Pentagon's missile defense system, according to Trump.

"The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security," Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115893255826342514">wrote on Truth Social</a> during Wednesday’s talks. "It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!"

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/greenland-united-states-denmark-trump-vance-rubio-meeting-cc278af4f3daf725029101966ba03568">Denmark and Greenland have maintained</a> that the territory is part of Denmark and protected by the umbrella of the NATO military alliance.

But Trump is trying to make the case that NATO should help the United States acquire the world’s largest island and says anything less than it being under American control is unacceptable.

Trump has nonetheless repeatedly said he's considering a range of options, including military force, to acquire Greenland.

"Militarily, without the vast power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term, and am now bringing to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent - Not even close!" <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115893255826342514">Trump said</a>. "They know that, and so do I. NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable."

The first meeting of the high-level working group involving both sides will be held in a few weeks.
