The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on May 19 that it is launching a federal investigation into Washington state’s policy of housing male inmates in women’s prisons. The DOJ cited potential violations of female prisoners’ constitutional rights.

The Department said it notified Gov. Bob Ferguson of the probe into alleged violations at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor. The investigation centers on allegations that the facility has failed to protect female inmates. There are accusations of sexual assault, rape, voyeurism, and intimidation by male inmates who say they identify as female.

Washington adopted its policy in 2020. It allows male inmates who say they identify as women to request transfers to female prisons.
