White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is calling for the immediate termination of specific United Nations (UN) staffers if it’s discovered they are responsible for intentionally stopping the escalator at UN headquarters in New York City on Tuesday.

The escalator malfunction forced President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to walk up the stairs as they were heading for the UN general assembly where Trump was scheduled to speak.

"If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” Leavitt <a href="https://x.com/PressSec/status/1970572584962895888">posted on X</a>.

In her post, Leavitt referenced a London Times <a href="https://x.com/PressSec/status/1970572584962895888/photo/1">X post</a> that cited a report alleging that UN workers had joked they may turn off the escalators and elevators to emphasize a lack of funding.

In a <a href="https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/sg/note-correspondents/2025-09-23/note-correspondents-un-escalators">statement</a>, UN secretary general spokesperson Stephane Dujarric blamed a U.S. delegation videographer who may have accidentally triggered a safety mechanism that prompted the escalator to come to a sudden stop.

“A readout of the machine's central processing unit, indicated that the escalator had stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator,” Dujarric said. “The videographer may have inadvertently triggered the safety function described above.”

During his speech, Trump criticized the UN for what he described as failed migration policies and green energy initiatives, as well as poor leadership in ending wars.

Trump also questioned the role of the UN, which was initially established in 1945 to maintain international peace and security, provide humanitarian assistance, protect human rights, and uphold international law.

After the speech, Leavitt warned on <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/leavitt-calls-firing-investigation-un-escalator-malfunction-trumps-intentional">Fox News</a> that the White House is intent on holding any perpetrators of sabotage accountable.

“When you put all of this together, it doesn't look like a coincidence to me, and I know that we have people, including the United States Secret Service, who are looking into this to try to get to the bottom of this,” she told Fox News host Jesse Watters.

Leavitt added that she is suspicious of how the audio and teleprompter were functioning.

"First, it was the escalator, then it was the teleprompter, and then Katie Pavlich from Town Hall, who we offered a seat in the press pool to cover the president's historic speech today, noticed that the audio inside of the room was much lower and different for the president of the United States than the previous speaker," Leavitt said.
