Authorities in Malaysia are trying to squash rumors that pictures posted online of a strange cat-like creature are real.

The bizarre creature has a human-looking face except for fangs and pointed ears, and has a scruffy crop of black hair on its head and some hair on the back of its cat-like body.

It has larger-than-life claws on both the front and back feet that are disproportionate to its kitten-sized body, and its small tail is furless.

The creature is about the size of a hand, and a video of someone picking it up appears to show the creature moving independently.

The images were reportedly taken in the Pahang region, but authorities said there have been no sightings of the animal, and while the images are real, the creature is not.

“Checks revealed the images were downloaded from the internet before it was shared on social media, claiming that the discovery was made in Pahang,” Pahang State Police Chief Datuk Rosli Abdul Rahman said, according to the Daily Mail. “I hope the public will stop circulating news about the alleged discovery.”

Previous posts said the pictures came from an undisclosed laboratory in the western Malaysian province.
