Search and rescue operations ongoing for seven missing in US Navy destroyer crash

U.S. Navy releases video of destroyer involved in Japan collision

The search continues for seven missing sailors near Yokosuka after a Philippine-flagged container ship collided with the USS Fitzgerald Navy destroyer.

“We’ve still got an active search and rescue going on for our missing shipmates, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. And, I’d really like to thank the whole Yokosuka community and also our Japanese partners, they’ve been tremendous throughout this,” said U.S. 7th Fleet Navy Adm. Joseph Aucoin.

The Navy released a video of the destroyer as it sailed back to its base after being struck on its starboard side by a container ship more than three times its size.

The collision happened at 2:30 a.m., local time, on Saturday some 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, the mouth of the busy Bay of Tokyo.

The collision happened with most of the crew would be asleep.

The Fitzgerald is an Aegis guided missile destroyer. It just had $21 million worth of upgrades and repairs in February.
