“It was amazing, it was exciting. It was exhilarating," said Gloria Shier, who attended a performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts in Costa Mesa, California, at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, on April 19. "The acrobatic, the dancing, everything was just very emotional. It really hits home in the heart.” She said the performance deeply touched her.
Shen Yun aims to revive the 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture that was almost stamped out when communists took over the country in 1949.

“I absolutely loved it, it was beautiful. ... the storylines were beautiful—about ancient history but very resonating with what's going on today in history."

“I really enjoyed it. It was so aesthetically pleasing,” said Lynhthy Bless, an actress and dancer. "The dancers were so impeccable in their timing and their fluidity, and you could just feel their passion. And I love what it stands for, and I learned more culturally about what China has gone through."

“I actually did not know that gymnastics movements actually stem from, originated from, Chinese classical dance. And there are so many things that I learn and I use in my own movements that I didn't know that that's where it came from. So it's really beautiful.”

“It brought about the vibrancy of the Chinese culture, the history, the glory days of the emperor, and then all the way [up to] modern times,” said Thomas Lin, a physician. "That's the history of the Chinese people throughout time. And then I felt that it was very vibrant, the colors are awesome. And so it just brings that appreciation for the whole world to see. So I love it, I love it."

“I think it's amazing,” said Tony Riccardi, a company CEO. "The colors of the performers and their outfits and their dancing has been absolutely something I would not expect. The music, the orchestra, is superb, and to tie that in with the dancing and their outfits and the culture and learning so much has been amazing."

“Very impressive, I was thrown off initially,” said Scot Shier, a business owner. "Then I realized tremendously that they integrated the live into the digital, high resolution, beautiful backdrops that change with every scene. It brought a whole new enveloping dimension to the whole production. Loved it."

Finding its roots in the Divine, ancient Chinese culture and values are reflected in Shen Yun’s performances through classical Chinese dance, music, and storytelling.
“Everybody's trying to achieve the truth, and then try to search for the truth, and therefore they get that enlightenment,” said Mr. Lin. "I felt that that was portrayed very well, and that's certainly what society needs. We need to aspire to the higher truth and to get out of the materialism of today's world and to ascend to a higher level. So I feel like Shen Yun delivers that in a beautiful way."

“It just tells us that we all have a free soul, and we should be able to express ourselves,” Ms. Shier said. "And that was the beauty of it, that there is a divine God that made us free people, and that's what inspired me throughout the show."

"The traditional values that were shown were very exciting," Mr. Riccardi said. "The kindness, the love, the respect. It's been a refreshing experience, with the colors, so beautiful, of the costumes, something I've never seen before, I don't think I would see anywhere else, except for here.”

“I believe we all save ourselves with each other and through kindness, through compassion, through love. And I really think that's what was spoken through all of that,” Ms. Bless said.

Shen Yun will be performing at The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 26 and 27.
