Concluding four days of performances, Shen Yun Performing Arts completed its visit to the historic southern French city of Toulouse on Jan. 13, showcasing traditional Chinese art and culture. Philosopher Jean-Paul Coujou, the recipient of the prestigious Charles Lévêque Prize from the French Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, found himself deeply inspired by the performance.

“It’s a shock, really, about another culture that knows how to preserve its traditions,” Mr. Coujou said. “You can really see here all the spirituality that resurges and all the spirit of China.”

Lisa Tournelier, a business owner, said, “This performance is magnificent, truly enchanting. So much poetry, so much depth as well, with a spiritual approach that resonates with me deeply.”

Jean-Pierre Blondeel, a restaurant owner, said, “I think it can bring us a lot of serenity and joy of life. We are disconnected from the real world, we are really somewhere else. It was truly great.”

Mr. Coujou said, “It’s a very beautiful performance. A lot of grace and technique. It’s very pleasant to watch.”

“And when we talk about grace, it’s also in the technique of the mastery of dance, and the forgetting of the body,” he added.

Ms. Tournelier said, “I felt a great sense of generosity, and what also touches me deeply is the delicacy—the delicacy in relation to the dancers, who truly do a marvelous job. I can’t say it any better.”

Through dance and music, Shen Yun conveys the profound spirituality of the divine Chinese culture, which theatergoers described as enlightening and deeply needed in today’s world.

“I find the messages conveyed to be very profound, very beautiful, and at the same time delivered with a sense of poetry, magic, and wonder,” said Ms. Tournelier.

Mr. Coujou said, “It allows for an opening of the mind with a sense of spirituality as well, which is very pleasant for us.”

“What this can bring, I think, and which is necessary for every nation, is the respect for tradition, for cultures, and above all, the great pleasure of opening up to other perspectives, to other representations of the world,” he added.

Ms. Tournelier said, “I believe that through art, it’s possible to convey far more messages to people who might not necessarily be open to the inner process and the spiritual journey in this world. I find that art, precisely, allows this—it opens hearts, it opens hearts and minds.”

“Through this performance, I felt that many values were conveyed, values that are somewhat lost in today’s world,” she said. “I rediscovered values that are dear to my heart, which are beauty, respect, honor, integrity— all these beautiful things, along with the depth of the spiritual approach, which, for me, is truly something that needs to be revived in this materialistic world.”
