From ‘Heartfelt Sorrow’ to ‘Jubilance,’ Shen Yun Moves Nashville Audience

A show of Classical Chinese dance is inspiring audiences around the world. Shen Yun Performing Arts held three performances in Nashville, Tennessee in early February.

“Oh, it has been amazing. It’s visually stunning. The athleticism of the dancers is truly impressive. And an amazing story, and the music that accompanies it is absolutely beautiful. I could not be more impressed,” said Charles DeMott, director of Safety & Security at O’Gara Training Services.

“Oh, my goodness, the performance is amazing. I’ve actually wanted to see this for several years,” radio host Kirk Harnack said.

“How they incorporate dance into the storytelling, nobody is standing around, right? Everybody is always making a move that’s expressive, that expresses what’s in their heart, in their mind, what they’re going to do next,” he added.

He was inspired by the songs from Shen Yun’s vocalists.

“I was inspired indeed by the English subtitles on the music that was sung,” Harnack said.

“And then when you realize what they’re singing about, the tradition, the faith tradition of: we are only here for a time, Earth is not our home forever. We didn’t come from here, and we will leave here. And that is a very inspiring message that came through in the songs, and I appreciate that,” he added.

Many appreciated the traditional Chinese culture that Shen Yun presents, as well as how it shines a light on modern-day problems under the Chinese Communist Party.

“The heartfelt sorrow and some of the suppression of human dignity that’s going on in China, but then the celebration of life and the jubilance of the seasons and the beauty of the country, and it’s very poignant,” said Phil Wells, principal consultant at AHEAD.

“They have a passion for what they do. And when they dance, you can see they all love to do it together. I think that makes the show even more… You can just feel that- it’s great to be here,” said Erik Brown, director of Supervision at Tennessee Security Finance.

“This is a performance that everyone should enjoy and learn from. There’s so much richness in the performance and in the message.” Mr. DeMott said.
