On Valentine’s Day Eve, Shen Yun Performing Arts kicked off a series of sold-out performances in Tours, France, at the Palais des Congrès. Among the theatergoers was Frédéric Legras, better known by his alias, Frédérick Gersal, a renowned French historical journalist. He attended with his wife, and the couple was delighted to explore 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

“We have a deep appreciation for Chinese culture, especially in dance and music. It was a chance to rediscover things we cherish, which we’ve enjoyed sharing with our children and grandchildren. But here, the performances of the dancers and musicians are absolutely remarkable. The singers are fantastic, and the presenters too! I was truly captivated by the [male emcee]. [The female emcee] was amazing as well, but when he spoke Chinese, it really moved me. What a wonderful show, truly wonderful,” Mr. Gersal said.

Mr. Gersal is also an author, known for his segments on the French Public Television and best-selling history books. Both he and his wife were moved by the grace radiated by Shen Yun's artistry.

“It was very emotional, I cried the entire time. And the set, where the artists step in and take us through time and space, is absolutely magical,” Mr. Gersal said.

Sabine Legras, Mr. Gersal’s wife, said, “Yes, a lot of emotions, because it's really great. Plus, the artists are excellent at miming and telling the stories. It truly transported us. It was a dreamlike experience, a very special moment.”

“I’m a historical journalist, so the history of China is familiar to me and I know it well. And because of that, it takes me through the emperors, the Mongols. All of this really moved me, resonating with my own culture,” Mr. Gersal said.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from “China before communism.” Each year, the company brings an all-new program with brand-new dances, music, and backdrops.

Mr. Gersal said, “Not only is there the presence of Buddha, but also this radiant sunlight that fills us each time. And nature, the mountains, the rivers, clearly shows that the Divine is present, both in the performance and within us, in the very way we, as humans, are made. I believe that, in this moment, East and West unite as one, thanks to you and this show, which I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone eager to experience such an extraordinary journey—especially since each year brings a new performance, as we were reminded tonight on stage. So thank you very much.”

Each performance presents stories of spirituality, faith, and morality. These values, rooted in the essence of traditional Chinese culture, were presented on stage through classical Chinese dance, leaving a profound impression on the French journalist.

Mr. Gersal said, “Always offering help to those in need, to those who are struggling or affected by illness. It's clear that even the older gentlemen give their strength and talent to support the younger ones, guiding them through life and helping them navigate life's challenges as they grow older.”

Mr. Gersal added, “It’s about transmission. This is exactly what this performance is doing: passing on values, sharing what shapes our history, our understanding of humanity and the past. Because China has 5,000 years of extraordinary history, and when we see how China is present in today’s world, we realize that its history will continue for millennia. So I believe this performance will last for centuries to come because we need it. Thank you very much.”

After wrapping up in Tours, Shen Yun will kick off a series of performances in Nantes, France, from Feb. 17–26 as it continues on its 2026 world tour.
