World-class dancers and musicians graced the stage at the ICC Birmingham on Jan. 2, as Shen Yun Performing Arts kicked off its 2026 tour in the UK.
Shen Yun has a mission to revive China’s rich history that was almost lost under communist rule. Audience members were impressed by China’s ancient culture.

“I have been blown away,” said Michael Paul, a business owner. He said the performance gave him an insight into Chinese culture that he hadn’t seen before.

“The skills and capabilities of the dancers are superlative,” he said. “I’m really impressed by the combination of the technology and the storytelling, the way it’s all integrated together. It’s very amusing and innovative.”

Consultant Sukhraj Gill said it’s critical to keep the traditional Chinese culture alive.

“It’s such a rich culture that China has had throughout generations and different civilizations. It’s survived a lot of turmoil in the past with different dynasties, etc. But then ... what’s always kept going is the culture, is this classical dance, is the music, is the instrumentation. And I think in these times it’s critical to keep this going.”

Legendary tales are brought to the stage with the aid of an animated backdrop, a live orchestra, and classical Chinese dance.

Mr. Gill commented on the spiritual depth of the performance.

“In these times, it gives people hope. It allows people to get into a place of mindfulness and also to think more deeply and more spiritual and more philosophical as to how China has left its mark on the world,” he said.

“There was something much deeper,” said company director Rohit Sujanani. “There was the faith, the devotion, the one-pointedness, the ability to do things and not just be spiritual, but actually produce results. That’s what these performance artists did, and that’s wonderful. So congratulations to all of them.”
