Shen Yun Performing Arts gave nine performances in Tokyo, Japan, at the Shinjuku Bunka Center from April 3–9, taking theatergoers on a journey through ancient China. Among the audience was actor Hideki Takahashi, who praised Shen Yun’s artistry and tradition.

Hideki Takahashi, an actor, said, “The overall balance was excellent, and everyone was perfectly synchronized. Watching it felt extremely pleasant. They express themselves through movement, and convey it together with the music, which actually makes it easier to understand and appreciate.”

“It was so wonderful that words can’t describe it. I can’t even express it. I rarely come across a stage performance that puts this much soul into it,” Yoichi Hayashi, an actor and dancer said.

Nobuko Takashima, a fashion design consultant and model, said, “The costumes were also very beautiful, so that really stood out to me as well. Since I work in the fashion industry, I would definitely like to take inspiration from those color combinations.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from “China before communism” through classical Chinese dance and music.

“I really love traditional culture so I believe that cherishing traditions that have been cultivated and passed down over time, and continuing to preserve them, is very important,” Mr. Takahashi said.

Mr. Hayashi said, “To achieve movements like that, and that level of expression, I thought about how much effort they must put in, through their daily study and training, and it truly gave me tremendous energy. And another thing is, if we trace humanity all the way back to its origins, it began with the Divine. That’s where it all began. But when I look at young people today, I feel like many of them have forgotten that.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun simultaneously tours the world with eight different companies, presenting an all-new production each year featuring original dances, music, and digital backdrops.

“Because the performance uses only dance and music to convey its message to the audience, it requires an extremely high level of physical expression, and beauty itself is also essential,” Mr. Takahashi said. “The costumes were also exceptionally beautiful.”

Mr. Takahashi added, “The digital backdrop was also very beautiful. Using visuals as part of the stage setting, and even having performers appear to jump in and out of the screen created something like a live interaction between the performers and the backdrop. You could really feel all of that, and you can tell the performers are extremely well trained.”

“By appreciating and taking in all of these things, I believe it ultimately contributes to one’s personal growth,” he said in closing.

Shen Yun has now concluded its Asia leg of its 2026 world tour and will return with a brand new production next year.
