The couple expressed their appreciation for the positivity within the performance.
“This is something that can lift spirits,” Mr. Hruza said. “I came from a communist country myself, so I find this kind of positive, optimistic, and truly life-type of activity really goes along with what the United States is, which is a land of opportunity for everybody. I think this exemplifies that. It’s also a wonderful tradition and cultural history of China before the communists came, which I think needs to be celebrated and preserved.”
Ms. Hruza, an optometrist with Envision Ophthalmology, said, “I think it is a beautiful example of—which might be strong—of light overcoming dark and a celebration of that. I just think it’s so beautiful.”
Mr. Hruza said, “I learned a lot because of the historical aspect. Going back to when they had the emperor who was there the longest. And so, really good folk stories, folklore-type stories, and very upbeat.”
“It felt light and beautiful and celebratory. I loved it. I loved everything about it. I kept thinking, I have to pick a favorite, but I can’t,” said Ms. Hruza.
In addition to ancient myths and legends, Shen Yun also portrays modern-day stories of spiritual persecution faced by the people in China.
Mr. Hruza said, “Showing the abuse that Falun Dafa is exposed to in China. I think that’s a story that needs to get out.”
“I thought it was wonderful to stand for something, and saying that by standing for God, we’re standing for humanity, for people, for kindness,” said Ms. Hruza.
“It’s just so uplifting. When you leave, you just feel lighter in your step and thinking about all the good and all the positive in the world,” Mr. Hruza said. “What you’re doing is touching so many lives in a good, positive way. So just keep it up, in spite of some of the challenges.”
