Shen Yun Performing Arts dazzled theatergoers at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido on Jan. 28. Among the audience members was the Deputy City Clerk for the City of La Mesa, with a commendation signed by the mayor of La Mesa, California, congratulating Shen Yun on its 20th-anniversary world tour.

“There was a lot I didn’t anticipate—the cultural experience in the history, and so that was really great to learn that, as well as seeing just the beautiful performance that was with it,” said Britney Hazzard, the Deputy City Clerk for the City of La Mesa. “Appreciating kindness and the inner tranquility and outer strength and how that is presented, and being able to help one another and being able to reap what you sow, I think, is very important.”

Shen Yun also received a proclamation from the Community Liaison from San Diego County’s 5th District, represented by Supervisor Jim Desmond. He congratulated Shen Yun on their performance and their dedication to the arts.

Adrienne Cisneros-Selekman, the Community Liaison for San Diego County’s District 5, said, “The show was fantastic. It’s my second time, and I really like how they tell the story of how it was before communism, and the beautiful grace and culture that was there before that. Luckily, some people have brought it to the United States. So we really, really appreciate learning about that. It’s very educational, but the dancing and the singing and the instruments are just wonderful, very gracefully done.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun has been touring the world since 2006, on a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture from before communism. Shen Yun now simultaneously tours the world with eight different companies, bringing stories of ancient China to life on stage.

“It was really fun and impressive to see the dancers and what they could do. And then, of course, with the backdrop that was accompanying the show, was incredible too. I liked all of it. All came together really nicely,” said Ms. Hazzard.

Ms. Cisneros-Selekman said, “I think the more people that get educated around the world, and I know you have eight groups like this touring, which is wonderful, because people need to be educated. And I think the more people get educated and share their culture and customs, will appreciate what China was before communism, and it’s just tradition, and we can never, we can’t erase history, and I appreciate what Shen Yun does because they’re making sure we do not forget China and the traditions and the beautiful things that they contribute to our world.”

Ms. Hazard said, “What an amazing accomplishment and a milestone to know. When it started out as one company, and now it has grown, and it’s worldwide, and being able to share the beauty of the dance and the culture around the world, I think, is really impressive.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Thousand Oaks, California, from Jan.30 to Feb. 1.
