Shen Yun an Educational, Rewarding Experience: Texas Audience

February 22, 2023

Shen Yun concluded its six performances in San Antonio, Texas, on Feb. 19.

The New York-based performing arts group was founded in 2006. They started from one company to eight companies touring around the world simultaneously.

Audience members shared that they appreciated the beauty of the show—as well as its educational value.

“Oh my gosh, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed, I cried, I was amazed. It was beautiful,” said Theresa Bowe, a city clerk in Yoakum. “I was in awe of all of it and it was toe-tapping. And I just wish I could be just a little bit like them. It was gorgeous.”

“It was such a wonderful performance. I was so impressed with the total execution of the production, from the music, to the costumes to the attention to detail,” said Bridgette Taylor, a general manager of facility programming and consulting. “And I love the educational side of it as well, because I learned a lot that I didn’t know beforehand,”

“I think what’s beautiful is how the play, the interplay between the masculine and the feminine in the play, and not so much just men and women, but just in the style of the dance coming through,” said Guillermo Rodriguez, who is the owner of HighPoint vCFO.

“I feel very immersed in what they’re trying to convey in the dancing. So it’s an amazing, rewarding experience. Thank you,” said David Phillips, a consulting partner at CASTRA Technologies.

Based on Shen Yun’s website, the show’s mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture through classical Chinese dance and live orchestra.

Mr. Phillips said he was moved by “a lot of the in depth of the heavens and the word heaven is capitalized in a couple of different places. And it really touches me.”

“They are amazing. I love the orchestra. I love the dancers, I love all of it. And please don’t stop pass[ing] on their history,” Ms. Bowe said.

“I was surprised how much they remind me of stories in my own faith, you know, it just speaks again, that there’s a common thread in all cultures, if you just look for it. So that was great,” Ms. Taylor said.

Shen Yun also sheds a light on the human rights issues and abuses happening in modern day China.

“What is being conveyed is the need to express yourself and to follow whatever religious path you take. So very much commonality and what we’re struggling with the United States as well. So a unity there for sure,” Mr. Phillips said.

“Good is always there, the culture is always there, no matter what is going on in the world, that the way things seem in the inside, the goodness of your culture, it’s always present,” Mr. Rodriguez said.

“Go see it. Go see it. It’s a beautiful experience,” Ms. Taylor said. “The people who are involved in this production worked so hard to make sure it was top notch from start to finish from A to Z. My money was well spent coming here today. Totally love it,”

Shen Yun will perform in two more cities in Texas: Dallas this weekend and Mcallen in April.
