Shen Yun Performing Arts captivated an enthusiastic audience at the Rosemont Theatre in Rosemont, Illinois, on April 24. In recognition of the company’s commitment to reviving 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from before communism, Rosemont Mayor Brad Stephens sent a letter of commendation to the performers.

“You’ve got to come see the show. Everything, the scenery, the dancers, the music, everything was really wonderful. You’ve got to see it,” said Mark Cima, a computer analyst. “It kind of made me think about how tradition is so important to all of us, and sometimes we forget about that, especially in the present time, but it kind of helped me think about that in respect to other people and how everyone can enjoy that part of life, basically.”

“I think that the mission that they’re caring to share—the history and the tradition is just incredible and very valuable for others to see and enjoy,” said Donna Markus, a former banker.

Ancient Chinese people believed their culture and values to be gifts from the Divine. Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took power in China in 1949, the regime has sought to break Chinese society’s belief in the Divine.

“One thing I’m glad that was mentioned was to remind Americans of the repression under communism. Too many are completely unaware of it, so I’m glad that there was some discussion of that,” said Tom Sleeter, an investment advisor.

“It captures a little story about the heritage and cultures that are so important for us Westerners who really don’t appreciate some of the things that are going on in the world,” said George Hartnett, a company director.

Shen Yun is simultaneously touring the world with eight companies. Every season, the artists present a new program featuring original dance, music, costumes, and backdrops for audiences to enjoy.

“What I liked is just the synchronization and tying the computer [digital backdrop] with it for them going into the clouds and into the sky. I think it really added a whole different dimension to the whole program,” said Bill Markus, a former banker.

“I hope that other people will come and enjoy it and respect the fact that there’s so much you can learn from it,” said Mr. Hartnett.

Shen Yun will be performing at the Kentucky Center, Whitney Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 29.
