Shen Yun Performing Arts raised the curtain at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, in Toronto on March 28. Audience members were in awe of the performers' skills and artistry.

CEO and architectural designer Berit Bech said, “It was incredible, incredible. I’m an artist, you could really see the artistry in it, the way that they were expressing themselves, the costumes, the colors. It was definitely something that I think everybody should experience.”

Economist John P. Calverley said, “I enjoyed particularly the comedy segments. So they were funny, and the costumes you’ve got and the music. It’s great little vignettes, very little stories which I enjoyed.”

Professor Carmen Puyo said, “I brought my 77-year-old aunt with me; it was her dream to come to this show. So I bought her tickets for Christmas, and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it’s beautiful. The dancing, everything, it’s beautiful.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance, live music, dazzling stagecraft, and expressive storytelling.

Ms. Bech said, “It is a lot of emotion, there’s a lot of joy. There is a lot of hardship. There’s a lot of overcoming different difficulties, and it’s always the beauty and love and humanity, it’s really something that was brought out through the whole show.”

Mr. Calverley said, “Especially the instrument, the erhu with the two strings. That really sounds lovely. I particularly enjoyed the solo part there.”

Ms. Puyo said, “The way they move, the way they dance, the way that they express themselves through movement. How they jumped out from the screen, I thought that was pretty cool.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun has been touring the world since 2006 and has since grown to eight different companies. However, Shen Yun currently cannot perform in China, where the Chinese Communist Party has suppressed traditional culture and persecuted people of faith.

Ms. Puyo said, “It is actually the last part that was very telling of what’s happening. And I didn’t actually realize that this is actually not allowed to be in China, which is too bad. We don’t hear much about it on the news, and we don’t hear much about it, but it’s kind of just opened up my eyes that I actually want to research it a little bit.”

Ms. Bech said, “It really is talking about how embracing the old and the traditions really will bring back that humanity and bring back more [of] a human element of how we live and should be living.”

Ms. Puyo said, “I think especially right now in the climate that we’re in, I think it’s an important reminder. That’s what we need to educate people on.”

Ms. Bech said, “Come and see it. Definitely see it. I think it’s for everybody to see. It’s all a different experience depending on where you are in life. Yeah, I would definitely recommend it.”

Ms. Puyo said, “I think you should come check it out, bring somebody with you. I brought my aunt, who really wanted to go. So if somebody whose dream is to come, make it come true.”

Shen Yun will continue to perform at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto through April 5.
