Shen Yun Performing Arts successfully closed the curtain on three performances in Daegu, South Korea, on May 3. Since 2006, the arts group has toured the world with a mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture and values, which ancient Chinese people believed were inspired by the divine.

“I would describe it as the pinnacle of splendor,” said Hong Jinwoo, a company representative. “I was deeply impressed by how each dancer could express their individual role through movement. The costumes matched the background beautifully, and the flowing, water-like motion was also really lovely.”

“It was so moving. I truly think it was a great decision to come,” said Kim Chul-Soo, the president of the Museum Association. “Especially the dance, it felt like it was at a world-class level. I was amazed that there wasn’t even a sound when they landed. Truly incredible. It was very easy to follow along because of the explanation provided by the hosts. To take 5,000 years of Chinese history and condense it into dance, that’s astonishing. The director who created this must be an incredible person, a truly great artistic director. Thank you for bringing such a performance all the way to us here in Daegu.”

“It felt like I had been invited to a feast of the gods, like I was joining in a Divine celebration. The mysterious blend of ancient and modern times, through music and dance was so amazing that my heart is still pounding,” said Kim Eun-Ju, the director of the National Museum of History.

Shen Yun, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, is based in New York and cannot perform in China, as its mission is to show the world China before communism. For a very long time, the company also couldn’t perform in South Korea because of interference from the Chinese Communist Party. Currently, Shen Yun is still facing challenges in South Korea, as the Chinese Embassy has been pressuring theaters to cancel the performance.

“As society becomes more modern, we are gradually losing our traditions. But this performance reminded me that within those traditions are values like respect and courtesy that we, as human beings, must preserve. Performances like this are extremely important for helping us hold onto that. Through this kind of cultural art, which we don’t often encounter, we are reminded of the beauty of etiquette and tradition. It becomes a meaningful opportunity to learn and reflect,” Ms. Kim Eun-Ju said.

“This is a show I never miss, and always look forward to seeing. The profound artistic world it expresses allows anyone to take something meaningful from it to absorb it deeply, and find inspiration for life,” said Seo Jin-Gil, the president of the Rituals & Tea Culture Promotion Center.

“In the midst of our harsh and hectic world, this stage created a peaceful, spiritual space, even if just for a short while. It was something we could watch in comfort, something that touched the soul. In that sense, this performance gave us great hope and nourishment for life. It’s a show we eagerly await again next year, and the year after that,” he added.

Shen Yun will be performing in Gwacheon, South Korea, on May 9 and 10.
