FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—When artist Lauren Shapiro entered the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Dec. 27, she hadn’t expected to be moved to tears. After attending Shen Yun’s evening show with her husband Shane, Mrs. Shapiro said she was deeply moved by the artists’ skill in storytelling.

“It was very dramatic and very impactful. There were a lot of stories that made me feel like I was going to cry,” she said. “I definitely felt a strong energy.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company.

Endowed with 5,000 years of history, China was once known as the “Land of the Divine.” For millenniums, its people believed that by keeping their hearts pure and adhering to strict moral standards, they would be blessed by the divine.

Indeed, for 5,000 years the country prospered. However, after the communist takeover and its spread of atheism, all this traditional culture was systematically destroyed. Today, Shen Yun’s goal is to bring back the beauty and goodness of pre-communist China.

Mrs. Shapiro thought the artists did a great job adhering to their mission.

“I think tradition is how we understand the future as well as the past. The show presented [these values] in a contemporary way that keeps them alive,” she expressed. “This is very important to the heart of their story.”

Mr. Shapiro, a doctor of physical therapy, enjoyed the evening and thought it was “a great experience.”

“The colors were just so vibrant. There’s something [about Shen Yun] that makes me feel like it’s very expressive and creative. It’s awesome to be able to come here and watch the show—to be with my family and enjoy all of that,” he added.

“[The dancers] are in amazing shape. They have incredible work ethics and discipline.”

Referring to Shen Yun’s patented 3D digital technology that creates seamless interaction between the backdrop projection and the performers on stage, Mr. Shapiro said it felt like the performers had superpowers.

“How the dancers seemingly floated up into the air was pretty interesting. The choreography and the movements connecting with the music—it really was a divine experience.”

Last but not least, Mr. Shapiro would like to thank the Shen Yun performers for the evening.

“The team that put up the whole production—that was an amazing feat to put together. It integrated very well,” he said. “They have incredible work ethics and discipline. Keep up the good work.”
